Basic education for adults

For immigrants

The basic education for adults is composed of three phases: literacy phase, beginning phase and ending phase. You start studying in the phase that is right for you, and an individual study program will be made for you. Studies include study advising and working life skills.

In the literacy phase

You will study the Finnish language, mathematics, society and culture, environmental and natural sciences and optional subjects. The aim is to be able to read and write and to be ready to continue studying in the initial phase of basic education.

You don’t need to have previous Finnish language skills.

Duration is 1 school year.

In the beginning phase

The subjects to study are the Finnish language, mathematics, society and culture, environmental and natural sciences, health education, and optional subjects.

The starting level in Finnish must be A1.3.

Duration is about 1.5 school years.

In the ending phase

The subjects to study are the Finnish language, English, mathematics, ethics, history, social sciences, physics, chemistry, biology, geography, and health education.

The starting level of Finnish must be A2.1.

Duration is about 1.5 school years.

Target group

Basic education of adults aims at over 17-year-old immigrants. Concerning the age, no upper limit has been fixed for this education.

  • Once you have completed the beginning phase, you can obtain the graduation certificate of comprehensive school and you can apply for further studies
  • You can complete your examination of basic studies or raise the obtained grades
  • You can also carry out separate studies
  • You can learn reading and writing skills and the Finnish language
